The trusty M5 is getting the deluxe treatment today. First it was the new(ish) tires, and now it’s a fancy steering wheel. Factory leather and a few more buttons, although I’m not sure what they will do, if anything. For some reason there’s a little damage to my old wheel and I have no idea how it happened, so finding a replacement will make me feel a little better. The amazing thing is how light this thing is, which I’m assuming it’s for safety reasons. I picked up the box and questioned what was inside because it just did not feel heavy enough.
And what the hell are those two extra wires for? Nothing important I hope...

Yeah, I guess that’s a possibility. I was thinking that the ‘bag would have a more substantial connection, but I guess I won’t know until I pull the old wheel.

all you need is a spark for the detonator, nothing more :)

Shouldn’t be SRS. Airbag gets connection from the clock spring, which runs into the column harness, in most cases. SRS shouldn’t have a reason to tie into the wheel, that should be signals from the switches headed back into the column.
It looks like it should run to one of the wheel mounted switches. I was thinking it might’ve been tapped into aftermarket stereo/phone, but not sure.
If you’re doing it yourself, and have never played with airbags, be careful.

Thanks for the info. It seems to match how I thought SRS devices were wired up. My auto tech training occurred way back before airbags were common and thus I’ve got no first-hand experience with them. Others on the forum have given me good hints about how to work on this system so I have less fear than I did just a few weeks ago. Careful and slow is the way to go.

I thought yellow was pretty universal? I am wondering if its heater loom but they’re kind of thin for that. It may also be random power, a lot of later model BMWs run power everywhere for any possible aux features. I just tapped my e39 for an extra outlet using the car phone power wires

well, the rest of the wirsed are connected to it, and the ONLY thing missing in the wheel is the airbag. I put two and 2 together and got 4.

and an airbag to the face =p I’ve never taken a steering wheel apart so the yellow part I only know from chassis wiring. I take it you confirmed its airbag?

nope. I’ve never taken an airbag apart.
motorcycles tend to not have them. Though new goldwings do.

Hah forgot about that. Its weird how much stuff bikes have on them now, even abs is weird to me. Newest bike I have owned (or ridden I think...) is an 02.
